Design trends shift and change all the time, but when it comes to timeless details that can grow with your style as it changes, Western decor is a reliable partner. The cowboy chic aesthetic is all about deep, warm hues, rich texture and pattern, and mixed materials. Because of the inherently organic nature of Western style, it can pair happily with a variety of other design aesthetics. Mix industrial metals with soft cowhide; a modern sculptural dining table with rustic leather dining chairs; or pair a cream Scandi lounge chair with a plush faux fur throw. Combining styles not only adds dimension, but it also makes your space feel more intentionally designed.
With Drew and Jonathan’s new show, Chasing the West, coming soon, it’s the perfect time to go behind the design and uncover what the Western decor style is all about. Even if you don’t live somewhere rural, you can still incorporate the look into your home. We spoke with our in-house trend expert and SVP of Creative & Design, Elizabeth Garcia, about how the timeless style is making an impact in modern decor, and she spilled all the great details, including a mood board to inspire you. We included a few Western design elements we’re most excited about, too, as well as how to make them work in your unique space.
Chasing the West Mood Board

We always love to see the Bros help folks find and create their forever homes, but we also enjoy seeing how they transform new spaces in their style and functionality. Some on Chasing the West are looking to find solace in the wide-open spaces; others are looking to raise their families in nature; and some want to embrace the ranch lifestyle. Cowboy chic; rancher style; Western design—whatever you like to call the aesthetic, it’s one that’s making waves in modern home design, and it’s here to stay.
“I think Western decor is definitely having a moment because of its prominence in pop culture right now. Everything from Yellowstone to Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter Tour is leaning heavily into this trend. However, Western style is rooted in our history and is an American lifestyle at its core. For that reason, we believe this rustic look will not be some passing trend—there’s longevity here,” Elizabeth says. Here are more of her tips for how to get the look.
1. Hand-Crafted Details
“Textures should look love-worn but not too ragged. Lean toward hand-woven looking fabrics for blankets and pillows, with natural materials such as cotton and wool. We also love leather and leather-crafted looks and other natural hide inspired pieces. We love using unpolished stone and rustic wood as the foundation for the look. The overall vibe should be a bit restrained and evoke authentic, artisan craftsmanship,” Elizabeth says.
2. Balanced Aesthetics
“The formula to blend Western and modern design is to create a balance between the two,” she says. “Just a touch of Western style can go a long way. If you add too much, the look can become kitschy. Blending the Western aesthetic with modern finishes creates a fresh point of view and allows you to create a look that is more approachable, personal and evergreen.”
3. Timeless Western Furniture
“We are obsessed with oversized accent chairs right now. We believe an iconic chair in leather is of the moment and also stands the test of time. This would be a piece to invest in because they are timeless regardless of current trends,” Elizabeth says.
Now that you have tips to help you get started, it’s time to go shopping! And don’t forget to watch Chasing the West for even more inspiration.
