John Stamos Transforms His Childhood Best Friend Ken’s Garage

He’s America’s favorite uncle from Full House, a soap opera heartthrob, and the drummer for The Beach Boys since 1985. John Stamos has done it all, and this week on Celebrity IOU, he’s adding “demolition extraordinaire” to that list! He wants to gift his childhood best friend of 50 years, Ken, with a new studio that’ll spark his creativity and inspire him to start making music again. So, John called on Drew and Jonathan to get it started.

Ken and John first connected over their shared love of music, but when Ken’s father died, he stopped playing the drums. John hopes that with some help from the Bros, they can create a garage band refresh for Ken that’ll bring back his musical spark and get him doing what he loves most: jamming on the drums. John’s hopeful that with a little creativity (and a couple sledgehammers) they’ll be able to turn his garage into a cool, relaxed studio for Ken and his kids, where they can be creative and relax together. “You guys are dream-makers,” John says. “The world needs more Property Brothers!”

Stunning Studio Space

Ken’s house means the world to him. He grew up there and has always played drums in the space, but it’s definitely seen better days. There’s holes in the walls, it’s not insulated or sound-proofed properly for a studio space, and, as John says, “I’m surprised it’s still standing.”

New luxury vinyl flooring adds the warmth of natural wood without the maintenance, which is especially nice in a garage studio space. With plenty of comfortable furniture, a new drum set, and built-ins galore for his recording gear, John and the Bros made sure that they hit everything on Ken’s wish list.

Room to Lounge

Drew, Jonathan, and John opened up the wall that held an unused workshop space to help expand the square footage. They replaced the worn, unsafe garage doors with a couple of amazing bifold doors that look great, offer insulation, and provide amazing natural light.

They essentially gutted the space and installed updated framing, venting, insulation—the whole nine yards. With brand-new everything, Ken now has an ultra-cool place to lounge, make music, and hang out with his friends and kids.

Relaxing Outdoor Space

Outside, they turned an overgrown area that was hardly usable into a beautiful, serene outdoor space where Ken and his kids could relax. They added a succulent wall, too, which adds ambiance and a calming focal point. 

“John’s always had this thing about him where he could understand what people need and was so happy to give it to them,” Ken says. “I never thought that space would be so integral, but it is. And it’s amazing that he thought of that.”
